.Le scénariste Robert Pirosh renonça à la réalisation du film suite à un profond désaccord avec le producteur Henry Blanke et Steve McQueen. Au cours de la première réunion de travail, ce dernier expliqua que le projet présenté dans sa première mouture ne lui plaisait pas. Don Siegel ne se laissa pas démonter et imposa son autorité.

.Tous les intérieurs de La Grande évasion ont été tournés dans le studio Bavaria de Munich. Mais celui-ci ne tarda pas à être trop petit pour un projet de cette ampleur. La production fut alors obligée de demander la permission au gouvernement allemand de tourner dans la forêt nationale jouxtant le studio. La maison de production du film se chargea ensuite de dédommager le gouvernement en achetant deux mille graines d'arbres pour repeupler la forêt endommagée par le tournage.

.Le tournage du Mans a débuté sans scénario, avec pour but de filmer seulement la course. Trois écrivains, parmi lesquels Harry Kleiner et l'expert automobile de Playboy Ken Purdy, travaillèrent à l'écriture du script dans une roulotte de Solar Productions, campement improvisé à proximité du Mans.
