.Steve McQueen dépassa le budget prévu en engageant sur le plateau les services de coureurs professionnels comme David Piper, Jonathan Wild, Dereck Bell et Jackie Ickx, et en ayant recours à 25 voitures pour simuler la compétition. Parmi elles, trois Porsche 917, quatre Ferrari 512, une Porsche 908, une Matra et une Corvette.

.Steve McQueen exceeded the budget envisaged by engaging on the plate the services of professional runners like David Piper, Jonathan Wild, Dereck Bell and Jackie Ickx, and by having recourse to 25 cars to simulate the competition.  Among them, three Porsche 917, four Ferrari 512, Porsche 908, a Matra and a Corvette.

 .Le tournage ne fut décidément pas de tout repos, retardé par de graves accidents. La Ferrari de Dereck Bell prit feu et le conducteur fut brûlé au visage et aux mains ; David Piper fut amputé de la jambe droite après avoir percuté sa Porsche 917 contre un garde-fou et Steve McQueen frôla la mort en évitant de peu un camion à trois cents à l'heure.

.Turning was definitely not whole rest, delayed by serious accidents.  Ferrari of Dereck Bell took fire and the driver was burned with the face and the hands;  David Piper was cut down by the right leg after having struck his Porsche 917 against a parapet and Steve McQueen came very close to death by avoiding little a truck to three hundreds per hour.

la grande évasion est inspiré de fait réels le camp de luft north a vraiment éxisté les trois tunnels y ont été creusés et soixante seize prisonniers ont pris la fuite en revanche tous les personnages sont nés de l'imagination des auteurs

après une sortie très discrète en novembre 1958 ce film est revenu dans les cinémas français le 13 avril 1977 pour bénéficier de l'impact dû au nom de steve mcqueen devenu star entre-temps

le tournage de cette production a  eu lieu en angleterre steve s'est rendu dans le sussex à plusieurs reprises afin d'assister à une célèbre  course automobile et à ses préparatifs la brand's hatch mieux il s'y inscrit en tant que concurrent accompagné sur les lieux par robert wagner .il a malheureusement été victime d'un serieux accident et n'a eu la vie sauve que grâce à d'excellents réflexe le soir il a convié plusieurs pilotes et mécaniciens de la course à faire la fête auprès de lui dans son hôtel de londres le savoy

(je serais toujours reconaissant à ce bon vieux josh randall c'est lui qui ma mis le pied à l'étrier mais maintenant j'ai vraiment de la chance une maison sur la colline une femme qui me plait deux gosses en bonne santé et une table bien garnie les vaches maigres c'est enfin fini) steve mcqueen
